Hospital hit by a cyberattack cancels surgeries

13 Mar 2020

The Brno University Hospital in the Czech Republic reports being hit by a cyberattack in the middle of a COVID-19 outbreak. The attack was deemed severe enough to shut down the entire IT network, postpone urgent surgical interventions, and re-route new acute patients to a nearby hospital.

The Brno University Hospital operates one of the biggest COVID-19 testing laboratories in the country. The attack is currently under investigation.

Recommendations

Despite the COVID-19 pandemics, hackers -- regular cybercriminals and not advanced state-sponsored groups -- have not eased operations. There is a need for systematic efforts to track and foresse such attacks and raise awareness.
